Fishing Florida Bay on New Years Eve 2024-25
Guess Who's Back !!
It's been two years since Icy and I were last fishing in Florida Bay. We're back out there and the bite is definitely on.
We started out mid-morning on New Years Eve with a hard stop, need to be back at the marina by 2pm. Not having fished the area in quite a while, we headed to an area that previously had held fish. We were not the only ones with that same idea. It wasn't long before we were into speckled trout of varying sizes. They all had been eating well based on their roundness. Icy put three in the cooler, putting me to shame with my single. When that bite died off, we changed locations. What was once a rather productive area (two years ago) apparently held only mullet and hard heads. Giving it a half hour, we changed course for yet another location. We found a few small trout before landing some gafftopsail cats which found themselves keeping the four trout company in the cooler. Our time had run out, so we headed back to the dock.
It was a beautiful day out on the water. It was great being back out there.
I appreciate each of you hanging with the channel during these past two years. The issues that have kept me close to home are getting better every day. Hopefully, I'll be back out on the water on a regular basis.
Wishing you all bent rods and tight lines,
~Jim

It had been a long 16 months since I had last been out on the KW when I took my son out for this fishing trip out of Flamingo's Marina into Florida Bay. The weather was perfect for this father/son trip and we were determined to make the best of our opportunity. We fished four of my spots that usually produce, however with warm waters and being out of touch with more recent data the bite wasn't ...
Hot Speckled Action - Starting The New Year With Fatties - January, 2023

Happy New Years! How about starting the New Year off with a fast action fishing trip? Icy and I had a limited amount of time to fish due to other obligations. We launched a bit later in the morning at Flamingo and headed out to see if we could get back into those speckled seatrout that we finished off last year with. The tide was super low both due to the tide cycle and the moon phase. The area...

On this last day of 2022, Icy and I head out of Flamingo's Marina to enjoy yet another fishing adventure in Florida Bay. We left the Flamingo docks shortly after sunrise. We could not help but notice probably twenty dead snook and a tarpon on the ramps and in the harbor, obviously caused by the cold wave that Florida had recently experienced. A crew was trying to return the carcasses to the wat...

On this trip, Icy and his friend Angel accompany me on another fishing adventure into Florida Bay inside Everglades National Park. Another productive trip of speckled trout fishing in Florida Bay, out of Flamingo Marina, Everglades National Park. If you believe what the weather forecasters say, the wind on this day should have been at 5mph all day long. Not! It was blowing at 10-15mph all day (apologies for the wind noise you'll hear in the video). At least one boater changed their mind to fish the the inside after backing...
Trout, Sails and ??? - March, 2022

On this windy day in March (sorry about the wind noise!), I'm headed out of Everglades National Park's Flamingo Marina and into Florida Bay in search of speckled trout and gafftopsail catfish. Florida Bay in Everglades National Park. This is a long video. There is lots of action involving many species, and a request for help in identifying a couple fish we really couldn't decide what they were. If you know, please comment. Will try again but as both trim units weren't leaking only the tilt although I replaced everything I suspect the seal is faulty. Not factory but aftermarket. Best lesson I learnt was to leave the whole assembly on the motor and only loosen the two back bolts. I removed it, with great difficulty then couldn't undo the ram caps in the vice. Reinstalled and then was able to get the caps off undamaged. 1988 motor so wasn't surprised. Thanks for guidance and communication. Much appreciated. Grant Tasmania Aust

    All good up until you removed the top seal at the end of the ram. You said you used a vice to hold the top end ie: the eye loop at the top of the ram in the vice and a drill bit and screwdriver in the holes at the other end. What about the small sleeve in the seal cap. did you just snap it off and not replace. You skipped that whole step

    • @JimMFishing
      @JimMFishing 2 місяці тому

      @grantscott8429 - Grant, first thank you for watching and commenting. I am not sure what small sleeve you are referring to in the "seal cap". I do not recall having a sleeve incorporated in the tilt cap, and do not see one on the particular trim/tilt assembly referenced in the exploded parts diagram found at this link: www.boats.net/catalog/yamaha/outboard/2002/90hp/90tlra/power-trim-tilt-assy I have rewatched the video beginning at 19:22 and do not see anything similar to what you describe. No steps, other than the removal of the valve body from the ram, were missed in this video. Please keep in mind that I am not a mechanic by trade, simply a DIYer who filmed this procedure for my own benefit and that of others. Are you working on the same trim/tilt model as the one shown in this video? There are many variants used on Yamaha outboards. ~Jim

    • @grantscott8429
      @grantscott8429 2 місяці тому

      All good. There is a sleeve pin in the bottom part of the cap which I guesses went into the shift but when I actually broke the tension using your idea of drill and driver in the holes it came apart. Now I have to figure out why the top cap dust seal on one trim r is leaking when all were replaced and the other trim and the tilt ram are fine. Suspect the main O ring is letting fluid through

    Any suggestions how to re-thread the trim fluid reservoir? Threads got busted by previous owner and the plug wont come out.

      I honestly would be guessing. If you can apply pressure behind the head to help the threads as you turn it, it may come out. I’d consider retapping the reservoir if you can extract the plug. Wishing you success, Jim

    After dropping that difficult 3rd bolt behind the whole trim unit I had to remove those 2 bottom bolts to retrieve it. With the whole unit loose, it made it much easier to put that difficult bolt back in. The trim unit was easy to resecure. If I had to do it again I wouldn't hesitate to remove all 8 bolts giving me easier access to all 3 trim motor bolts.

    Great video Jim. I cannot for the life of me get the seals out of the caps. Sliced my hand a few times now trying.

      Robert, sorry to hear of your injury. As you could see in the video, patience and persistence is what worked for me. Just be careful not to scratch the metal of the cap.

    Anyone have the torque specs for the trim & tilt screw caps?

      Apologies for a late response as I just today saw your comment. The C90 service manual does not list a torque spec for the caps.
